Abstract The objective was to evaluate gas exchange and the leaf area requirement for yield in Cavendish and Gros Michel bananas. The cultivars Grande Naine, Calipso, Bucaneiro, FHIA-17 and FHIA-23, and two production cycles, were arranged in a completely randomized experimental design, in a factorial scheme, with five replicates. For the physiological characteristics, a 5x9x2 factorial arrangement was considered, with cultivars, evaluation periods and reading times. Cultivars Bucaneiro and Calipso require larger leaf area per unit produced and FHIA-23, smaller, which suggests a greater photosynthetic efficiency per leaf unit for FHIA-23, confirmed by the higher masses of bunches and hands and greater numbers of hands and fruits. Gas exchange varies with cultivars, evaluation periods and reading times. Cultivars FHIA-17 and Calipso, Gros Michel type, respectively showed higher photosynthesis and transpiration rates than Grande Naine, Cavendish type. Net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, quantum efficiency of photosynthesis, instantaneous water use efficiency and carboxylation efficiency are higher at 8:00 h than at 14:00 h. The month of June allowed the cultivars to express the highest values of photosynthesis rates, incident radiation on leaves, carboxylation efficiency and stomatal conductance.

Resumo Objetivou-se avaliar trocas gasosas e requerimento em área foliar para rendimento de bananeiras Cavendish e Gros Michel. As cultivares, Grande Naine, Calipso, Bucaneiro, FHIA-17 e FHIA-23, e dois ciclos de produção foram dispostos em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial, com cinco repetições. Para características fisiológicas, considerou-se arranjo fatorial 5 x 9 x 2, com cinco cultivares, nove períodos de avaliação e dois horários de leituras. As cultivares Bucaneiro e Calipso requerem maior área foliar por unidade produzida, e a FHIA-23, menor, o que sugere maior eficiência fotossintética por unidade de folha para esta, comprovada pelas maiores massas de cachos e de pencas, e maiores quantidades de pencas e frutos. As trocas gasosas variam com as cultivares, épocas de avaliação e horários de leitura. As cultivares FHIA-17 e Calipso, tipo Gros Michel, expressaram, respectivamente, maiores taxa de fotossíntese e de transpiração, que a Grande Naine, tipo Cavendish. A fotossíntese líquida, condutância estomática, e as eficiências quântica da fotossíntese, instantânea de uso da água e de carboxilação são maiores às 8 horas comparada às 14 horas. O mês de junho possibilitou às cultivares expressarem os maiores valores de taxas de fotossíntese, radiação incidente nas folhas, eficiência de carboxilação e condutância estomática.

ABSTRACT. This study evaluated the effects of fertigation, banana biomass as a soil covering under drip and micro-sprinkler irrigation system on the root growth and distribution and their relations with chemical soil attributes, soil water availability, and productivity. This work was conducted in a field with banana 2.5 × 2.0 m spacing and irrigated every two days using a drip and micro-sprinkler irrigation system during the first crop cycle. The experiment followed a random block design with six treatments, two irrigation systems, two fertilization methods of fertigation and side-dressing, as well as two cultivation types with and without soil covering. Roots were collected from each plot using soil monoliths and digitalization allowed the determination of root length density, and diameter at several distances from the plant and at different soil depths. Total root length, density, and distribution by diameter were evaluated based on the treatment interactions with respect to the distance from the plant and the soil depth. Our results showed that the combination of the irrigation system, fertilizer application and soil covering influenced root growth and distribution. In addition, we found that the better soil conditions for root growth were in drip or micro-sprinkler systems with fertigation and cultivated biomass covering.

Resumo Conhecimento preciso e exato da percolação é uma chave para a determinação confiável do balanço de água no solo e da eficiência no uso da água pelas culturas. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar uma aproximação para estimar a quantidade de água percolada na zona radicular usando dados de umidade do solo (SWC) medidos em diferentes intervalos de tempo. A aproximação se baseou na diferença de umidade do solo dentro e abaixo da camada efetiva do sistema radicular de bananeiras em diferentes intervalos de tempo. Um lisímetro de drenagem foi utilizado para comparar os dados de percolação medida e estimada. A aproximação foi então utilizada em um bananal sob irrigação por gotejamento e por micro aspersão, com e sem cobertura do solo. O armazenamento de água no solo na zona radicular efetiva da bananeira foi avaliado em um perfil bidimensional do solo com sensores de reflectometria no domínio do tempo (TDR). A percolação média medida em lisímetro não diferiu do valor estimado pela aproximação, utilizando intervalos entre medidas de umidade do solo iguais ou superiores a 6 horas a partir do final do evento de irrigação. Estimativas de percolação sob gotejamento e micro aspersão em campo, com e sem cobertura do solo, foram consistentes com aquelas dos lisímetro, considerando o intervalo de 6 horas entre medições de umidade do solo. A percolação foi maior sob gotejamento com cobertura do solo. A quantidade de água percolada não foi influenciada pela presença da cobertura do solo sob irrigação por micro aspersão.

Abstract Precise, accurate knowledge of percolation is key to reliable determination of soil water balance and a crop’s water-use efficiency. This work evaluated an approach to estimate the amount of water percolated in the root zone using soil water content (SWC) data measured at different time intervals. The approach was based on the difference of soil water content within and below the effective root zone of banana plants at different time intervals. A drainage lysimeter was used to compare the measured and estimated percolation data. The approach was then used in a banana orchard under drip and micro sprinkler irrigation, with and without the use of mulch. The soil water storage in the banana’s root zone was evaluated within a two-dimensional soil profile with time domain reflectometry (TDR). Mean percolation measured in the lysimeters did not differ from the approach’s estimates using intervals between SWC readings equal to or longer than 6 h from the end of an irrigation event. Percolation estimates under drip and micro sprinkler irrigation in the field, with and without mulch, were consistent with those measured in the lysimeters, considering the 6-h interval of SWC measurements. Percolation was greater under the drip irrigation system with mulch. The amount of water percolated was not influenced by the presence of mulch under the micro sprinkler system.

Resumo São escassos estudos que determinem as características fisiológicas do abacaxizeiro, em condições de campo, irrigadas com água de qualidade inferior. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar eficiência fotoquímica em abacaxizeiro ‘Pérola’ irrigado com água salina no semiárido baiano. O experimento foi conduzido em blocos casualizados com cinco tratamentos representados pelas lâminas de irrigação: 100% da ETc com água de condutividade elétrica (CEa) de 0,75 dS m-1 e 50, 75, 100 e 125% da ETc com aplicação de água de CEa de 3,6 dS m-1. As leituras da fluorescência da clorofila “a” foram realizadas durante 13 meses através de fluorômetro de luz modulada, em todos os tratamentos. Verificou-se que a eficiência quântica (Fv/Fm) variou ao longo do ciclo do abacaxizeiro com valores abaixo do ideal, principalmente, no final do ciclo. As variáveis rendimento quântico do fotossistema II (Yield), dissipação fotoquímica (qP), dissipação não-fotoquímica (NPQ) e taxa de redução de fluorescência (RFd) não foram influenciadas pelas lâminas de irrigação avaliadas. Portanto, a utilização da energia nos processos fotossintéticos de plantas de abacaxizeiro não são influenciados pela irrigação com lâminas de água salina com condutividade elétrica de 3,6 dS m-1.

Abstract Studies determining physiological characteristics of field-grown pineapples irrigated with low-quality water are lacking. This work evaluated the photochemical efficiency of ‘Pérola’ pineapple irrigated with saline water in the semiarid region of Bahia, Brazil. The experiment was carried out in randomized blocks with five treatments consisting of the following irrigation depths: 100% of ETc using water with electrical conductivity (ECw) of 0.75 dS m-1; and 50, 75, 100 and 125% of ETc using water with ECw of 3.6 dS m-1. Chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements were made over the course of 13 months using a pulse-modulated fluorometer, in all treatments. Quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm) fluctuated throughout the cycle of the pineapple with values below the ideal, especially at the end of the crop cycle. Quantum yield of photosystem II (Yield), photochemical quenching (qP), non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) and chlorophyll fluorescence decrease ratio (RFd) were not influenced by irrigation depths. Therefore, energy used for photosynthetic processes in pineapple plants is not affected by irrigation using saline water with electrical conductivity of 3.6 dS m-1.

Resumo Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a produtividade, a classificação de frutos e a eficiência de uso da água da bananeira ‘Prata-Anã’ submetida a densidades de plantio, lâminas de irrigação e poda de pencas. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, com três lâminas de irrigação (LI); 50, 75 e 100% da evapotranspiração da cultuta (ETc), aplicadas por microaspersão; quatro densidades de plantio (DP); 1.666, 2.083, 2.666 e 3.333 plantas ha-1; e duas formas de poda de pencas (PP); uma e duas pencas; em esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas, com LI nas parcelas; DP nas subparcelas, e PP nas subsubparcelas; com quatro repetições, no primeiro ciclo de produção. A poda de duas pencas aumenta o número de folhas, a área foliar, o índice de área foliar, a massa e o diâmetro dos frutos, a massa total e a massa média das pencas na bananeira ‘Prata-Anã’. A densidade de 3.333 plantas ha-1 e a lâmina de irrigação de 75% da ETc proporcionam os melhores resultados para o desenvolvimento da planta, com aumento de produtividade, manutenção da classificação comercial e economia de água, independentemente da poda de pencas.

Abstract The objective of this study was to assess the effect of planting densities, irrigation levels and bunch trimming on yield, fruit grading and water-use efficiency (WUE) of ‘Prata-Anã’ banana plants. The following factors were combined in a randomized block design: three irrigation levels (IL), 50, 75 and 100% crop evapotranspiration (ETc); four planting densities (PD)- 1,666; 2,083; 2,666 and 3,333 plants ha-1; and two bunch trimming treatments (BT), removal of either one or two hands from the bunch. The treatments were arranged in a split-split plot design. Irrigation level was assigned to main plots, PD to subplots and BT to sub-subplots, with four replicates. Measurements were made in the first production cycle. Removing two hands increased number of leaves, leaf area, leaf area index, fruit weight, fruit diameter, total hand weight and mean hand weight of ‘Prata-Anã’ banana plants. A plant density population of 3,333 plants ha-1 combined with an irrigation level at 75% ETc improves plant development and yield while maintaining fruit size and saving water, regardless of removal of one or two hands from the bunch.

Resumo Em condições semiáridas com maior variabilidade climática, é imperativo implementar estratégias de cultivo e de manejo de irrigação para aumentar a produtividade da bananeira com economia hídrica. Objetivou-se avaliar produção e eficiência de uso de água (EUA) da bananeira ‘Prata-Anã’ sob combinações de lâminas de irrigação e densidades de plantio. Os tratamentos foram: três lâminas de irrigação, 50; 75 e 100% da evapotranspiração da cultura, ETc, quatro densidades de plantio, 1.666 (3,0 x 2,0 m), 2.083 (3,0 x 1,6 m), 2.666 (3,0 x 1,25 m) e 3.333 (3,0 x 1,0) plantas ha-1 e dois ciclos de produção, dispostos em delineamento em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. O aumento da densidade de plantio até 3.333 plantas ha-1 diminui o número de folhas na colheita, as características produtivas dos frutos, aumenta o período para colheita, mas eleva a produtividade e mantém a classificação comercial dos frutos, independentemente da lâmina de irrigação. A redução de 50% da ETc com aumento da densidade de plantio para 3.333 plantas ha-1 proporciona aumento de 313,92% na EUA, no primeiro ciclo, e 295,27% no segundo ciclo. É possível obter maior produtividade e maior EUA com densidade de plantio de até 3.333 plantas ha-1 e irrigação inferior a 100% da ETc.

Abstract Yield-improving and water-saving techniques assume great importance in the cultivation of banana plants under semiarid regions, prone to greater climate variability. The objective of this study was to evaluate yield and water-use efficiency (WUE) response of ‘Prata-Anã’ banana plants to combinations of plant densities and irrigation levels: three irrigation levels, 50, 75 and 100% crop evapotranspiration (ETc), and four plant densities, 1,666 (3.0 x 2.0 m), 2,083 (3.0 x 1.6 m), 2,666 (3.0 x 1.25 m) and 3,333 (3.0 x 1.0) plants ha-1, evaluated in two production cycles. The treatments were laid out in a randomized block design with four replicates. Increasing plant density up to 3,333 plants ha-1 induced reductions in number of leaves at harvest and some yield components; also, longer cycles, and increased yields were observed while maintaining fruit marketable size, regardless of the irrigation level used. Using an irrigation level at 50%ETc and a plant density of 3,333 plants ha-1 led to an increase in WUE of 313.92% in the first cycle and 295.27% in the second cycle compared with 1,666 plants ha-1 irrigated at 100% ETc. Higher yields and WUE can be achieved by using a plant population density of 3,333 plants ha-1 and irrigation levels below 100%ETc.

ABSTRACT: Climatic uncertainties have compromised water resources, which influences irrigated agriculture. Irrigation is an important alternative to mitigate the effects of water scarcity. Partial root-zone drying (PRD) is a rational use of irrigation water. This study aimed to evaluate PRD for irrigation management of banana crop, cv BRS Princesa, under semi-arid conditions in Brazil. A field experiment was carried out with five treatments: one control (full irrigation) and four with 50 % reduction of water irrigation depth (WID) and frequencies alternating the side to be irrigated of the plant row of 0, 7, 14 and 21 days. Stomatal conductance, growth, yield and soil water status were evaluated. Results indicated that banana crop cv. BRS Princesa shows shoot physiological regulation for 50 % reduction of soil water and vapor pressure deficit between 1.92 and 2.25 kPa. Decrease in yields of treatments with WID reduction compared to full irrigation is due to the reduction of root uptake rate, which is related to vapor pressure deficit and soil water availability. Partial root-zone drying saves 50 % of irrigation water and increases water use efficiency of banana cv. BRS Princesa crop by 78 %.

ABSTRACT. Forage cactus pear is considered a xerophilic plant, so it is adapted to harsh semiarid conditions and is a forage resource of significant importance for animal production in regions that are subject to food shortage and long dry periods. We aimed to evaluate the morphometric and physiologic characteristics and water-use efficiency of ‘Gigante’ forage cactus pear under different settings of irrigation depth and irrigation intervals with saline water. The treatments included seven conditions of water application: rainfed, 5 liters of water per linear meter every 15 days; 7% reference evapotranspiration (ETo) with a 15-day irrigation interval; 15% ETo with a 7-day irrigation interval; 33% ETo with a 3-day irrigation interval; 50% ETo with a 2-day irrigation interval; and 100% ETo with daily irrigation. Likewise, the use of saline water (3.6 dS m-1) as irrigation water on forage cactus pear did not stress the crop even in the presence of salts. The treatment with saline water and 33% ETo with a 3-day irrigation interval increased the plant height, number of cladodes, cladode area index, green mass and dry matter yields of forage cactus pear.

Resumo O conhecimento da transpiração é de fundamental importância para aprimoramento do manejo da irrigação. Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho determinar o fluxo de seiva da mangueira ‘Tommy Atkins’ utilizando o método da sonda de dissipação térmica de Granier, sob irrigação com déficit controlado. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em um pomar de mangueira ‘Tommy Atkins’ com 10 anos de idade, irrigado por microaspersão, localizada no Perímetro Irrigado de Ceraíma, no município de Guanambi, Bahia. A determinação do fluxo de seiva foi realizada em três dias consecutivos em plantas sob irrigação com déficit controlado, com redução de 30 e 60% da evapotranspiração da cultura em três fases de desenvolvimento do fruto, início da floração ao pegamento dos frutos (Fase I), fase de expansão do fruto (Fase II) e fase de maturação fisiológica do fruto (Fase III). Verificou-se que o déficit hídrico controlado causa redução no fluxo de seiva em mangueiras ‘Tommy Atkins’.

Abstract Knowledge of transpiration is of fundamental importance for improving irrigation management. This study measured sap flow of the 'Tommy Atkins' mango tree using Granier’s thermal dissipation probe method under regulated deficit irrigation. The work was conducted in a 10-year-old ‘Tommy Atkins’ mango orchard, irrigated by micro sprinkler, located in the Irrigated Perimeter of Ceraíma, in Guanambi, Bahia, Brazil. Sap flow measurements were carried out on three consecutive days in plants under regulated deficit irrigation, with reductions of 30 and 60% of crop evapotranspiration in three phases of fruit development; beginning of flowering to early fruit growth (Phase I), fruit expansion (Phase II) and physiological maturation of fruits (Phase III). Regulated deficit irrigation led to reduced sap flow in ‘Tommy Atkins’ mango tree.

RESUMO A bananeira é uma cultura de grande importância para o semiárido brasileiro. No entanto, devido à baixa disponibilidade e irregularidades de chuvas nesta região, torna-se necessário o uso de uma combinação de técnicas que permitam maior eficiência no uso de água. Objetivou-se avaliar a influência de combinações de lâminas de irrigação e densidades de plantio na precocidade, produtividade e eficiência de uso de água em bananeira BRS Platina, no semiárido do estado da Bahia. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, distribuídas em parcelas subdivididas. Lâminas de irrigação de 55 %, 70 %, 85 % e 100 % da evapotranspiração da cultura (ETc) foram atribuídas à parcela, e densidades de plantio de 1.600 plantas ha-1, 2.000 plantas ha-1, 2.666 plantas ha-1 e 3.333 plantas ha-1 à subparcela. O peso das pencas e o número de frutos diminuíram de forma linear com o aumento da densidade de plantio (1.600 plantas ha-1 para 3.333 plantas ha-1), passando de 10,89 kg para 9,49 kg e de 97,16 para 89,86, respectivamente, enquanto a produtividade de pencas (15,5 t ha-1 para 25,79 t ha-1) e o período para colheita (442 para 455) aumentaram. O número de frutos aumentou linearmente de 89,46 para 98,08 com a lâmina de irrigação de 55 % para 100 % da ETc. O rendimento e a eficiência do uso de água aumentaram linearmente à medida em que a densidade de plantio (1.600 plantas ha-1 para 3.333 plantas ha-1) aumentou, passando de 5,14 para 8,60, e a eficiência do uso de água mostrou redução com a lâmina de irrigação, passando de 7,97 para 5,50, considerando-se 55 % a 100 % da ETc. É possível obter maiores rendimentos e maior eficiência no uso de água utilizando-se maior densidade de plantio e nível de irrigação abaixo de 100 % da ETc.

ABSTRACT Banana is a crop of major importance for the Brazilian semiarid region. However, because of the low availability and irregularities of the rainfall in this area, it is necessary to combine techniques that allow a higher water-use efficiency. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different combinations of irrigation depths and planting densities on the precocity, yield and water-use efficiency of BRS Platina banana plants, in the semiarid region of the Bahia state, Brazil. A randomized block design with four replicates was used, in a split-plot arrangement. Irrigation depths of 55 %, 70 %, 85 % and 100 % of the crop evapotranspiration (ETc) were assigned to the plot, and the planting densities of 1,600 plants ha-1, 2,000 plants ha-1, 2,666 plants ha-1 and 3,333 plants ha-1 to the split-plot. The hands weight and number of fruits decreased in a linear way with the increase in the planting density (1,600 plants ha-1 to 3,333 plants ha-1) from 10.89 kg to 9.49 kg and from 97.16 to 89.86, respectively; whereas the hands yield (15.5 t ha-1 to 25.79 t ha-1) and the harvest period (442 to 455 days) increased. The number of fruits increased linearly from 89.46 to 98.08 with the irrigation depth of 55 % to 100 % of the ETc. The yield and water-use efficiency increased linearly as the planting density increased (1,600 plants ha-1 to 3,333 plants ha-1) from 5.14 to 8.60, while the water-use efficiency decreased with the irrigation depth from 7.97 to 5.50, conidering 55 % to 100 % of the ETc. It is possible to obtain higher yields and a higher water-use efficiency by using a higher planting density and irrigation levels below 100 % of the ETc.

Resumen El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar las características fisiológicas del banano 'Princesa' bajo riego lateralmente alternado (RLA). El diseño experimental fue de bloques al azar, con cinco tratamientos y cinco repeticiones: 1 - reducción del 50% en la lámina de riego (LR) con el lado de frecuencia de la conmutación de la planta (FC) 7 días durante todo el ciclo de producción; 2 - 50% de LR y 14 días de FC en el ciclo; 3 - 50% de LR y FC 21 días; 4 - 50% con un LR de riego fijo (sólo una de las alas en un lado de la planta) y 5 - riego completo (dos líneas laterales con registros abiertos) durante el ciclo. La conductancia estomática - gs fue menor en las plantas regadas con 50% de ETc en sistema de riego fijo. Incluso con déficit de agua en el suelo, con el RLA con 50% de ETc, Fotosíntesis -A, Transpiración - E; Temperatura de la hoja - Tl, la concentración interna de CO2 - Ci; conductancia estomática - gs; Radiación fotosintéticamente activa - Qleaf; eficiencia de carboxilación - A/Ci; La eficiencia cuántica de la fotosíntesis - A/Qleaf; y la eficiencia instantánea del uso del agua -A/E en el banano 'Princesa' no difiere entre los tratamientos, lo que pone de relieve la importancia de la técnica de gestión de riego, con el ahorro de agua y sin cambios fisiológicos de las plantas.

Abstract This research aimed to evaluate physiological characteristics of 'BRS Princesa' banana under partial rootzone drying irrigation, PRD. The five treatments, 1 - 50% of reduction in water depth (WD) with a frequency alternation of irrigation side (FA) of seven days during the whole production cycle; 2 - 50% of WD and FA of 14 days in the cycle; 3 - 50% of WD and FA of 21 days; 4 - 50% of WD with a fixed irrigation (only one lateral line on one side of the plant); and 5 - full irrigation (two lateral lines with open shutoff valve) throughout the cycle, they were arranged in a randomized block design with five replicates. There is a reduction in photosynthetic rates and water use efficiency as a result of enzymatic impairment or stomatal closure, due to the increased of leaf temperature. The stomatal conductance - gs was lower in plants irrigated with 50% of ETc with fixed irrigation in one side of the plant. Even with water deficit in the soil, using the PRD with 50% of ETc, Photosynthesis - A Transpiration - E; Leaf temperature - Tleaf, internal concentration of CO2 - Ci; stomatal conductance - gs; photosynthetically active radiation - Qleaf; carboxylation efficiency - A/Ci; Quantum efficiency of Photosynthesis - A/Qleaf; and instantaneous water use efficiency - WUE 'BRS Princesa' banana were similar among strategies, highlighting the possibility of use of the irrigation management technique with PRD, saving water, and no physiological changes in the plants.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar as trocas gasosas, temperatura foliar, produtividade e eficiência de uso da água em mangueira 'Tommy Atkins' sob irrigação com déficit. O delineamento experimental foi em bloco casualizado, com sete tratamentos para a irrigação com déficit controlado (RDI) sob microaspersão e com cinco tratamentos para a irrigação lateralmente alternada (PRD) sob gotejamento. No manejo RDI os tratamentos consistiram da aplicação de 100, 75 e 50% da ETc nas fases F1 (início da floração até o pegamento dos frutos), F2 (desenvolvimento do fruto), e F3 (maturação fisiológica do fruto). No manejo pelo PRD os tratamentos consistiram da aplicação de 100, 80, 60 e 40% da ETc nas três fases com alternância do lado irrigado de 15 dias. Verificou-se que a irrigação com déficit controlado causa menos interferências negativas nas trocas gasosas que a irrigação lateralmente alternada e as trocas gasosas e temperatura foliar da mangueira 'Tommy Atkins' sofrem maiores influências de elementos do clima que da irrigação com déficit controlado. A irrigação lateralmente alternada com 60 e 40% da ETc ocasiona queda na produção da mangueira 'Tommy Atkins'. Irrigação com déficit controlado com até 50% da ETc aplicados na fase de maturação do fruto mantem a produtividade e a eficiência de uso da água.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this work was to evaluate the gas exchange, leaf temperature, yield and water use efficiency in 'Tommy Atkins' mango under irrigation deficit strategies. The experimental design was randomized block, with seven treatments with regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) under micro-spray and five treatments with partial root-zone drying (PRD) under drip irrigation. The treatments on RDI consisted of application of 100, 75 and 50% of ETc at the stages S1 (beginning of flowering to fruit set) S2 (fruit development) and S3 (fruit physiological maturation). The treatments on PRD consisted of application of 100, 80, 60 and 40% of ETc, in the same three stages, alternating the irrigation side every 15 days. The regulated deficit irrigation causes less negative interference in gas exchange than the partial root-zone drying, and the climate factors affect the gas exchange and leaf temperature of 'Tommy Atkins' mango more than the regulated deficit irrigation. The partial root-zone drying irrigation with 60 and 40% of ETc causes a decrease in the 'Tommy Atkins' mango yield. The regulated deficit irrigation up to 50% of ETc, applied at the fruit maturation stage, maintain the yield and water use efficiency.

The objective of this study was to determine the water distribution and extraction by mango variety 'Tommy Atkins' under different irrigation regimes. The treatments were: 1-Irrigation supplying 100% of ETc from flowering to fruit harvest; 2-50% of ETc from beginning of flowering to the beginning of the expansion of fruit and 100% of ETc to physiological maturity; 3-100% ETc from the onset of flowering to the beginning of fruit growth, 50% from the beginning of expansion to the start of physiological maturation and 100% during physiological maturation of the fruit; 4-100% ETc from the onset of flowering to the expansion of the fruit and 50% during physiological maturation; 5-Without irrigation. The soil water content was monitored using TDR between the end of phase I and the beginning of Phase III. The irrigation regimes caused different profiles of distribution and extraction of water through the mango tree. The extraction of water regardless of the treatment is primarily a within a distance less than 1.50 m from the plant and the first 0.50 m depth.

El objetivo de este trabajo es determinar la distribución y extracción de agua por la planta de mango 'Tommy Atkins' bajo diferentes regímenes de riego. Los perfiles de distribución de extracción de agua fueron determinados para los siguientes tratamientos: 1-Riego suministrado al 100% de la ETc en las fases: I (inicio de la floración al inicio de la expansión de los frutos), II (inicio de la expansión hasta el inicio de la maduración fisiológica) y en la fase III (maduración fisiológica de los frutos); 2-RDI con el 50% de la ETc en la fase I; 3-RDI con el 50% de la ETc en la fase II; 4-RDI con el 50% de la ETc en la fase III; 5-Sin riego. El monitoreo del contenido de agua en el perfil del suelo fue realizado entre el final de la fase I e inicio de la fase III con el uso de TDR. El régimen de riego ocasiona diferentes perfiles de distribución y extracción de agua por la planta de mango, en la cual, la extracción de agua independiente del tratamiento ocurre principalmente a la distancia inferior a 1,50 m de la planta y en los primeros 0,50 m de profundidad.

O processo de infiltração é influenciado pelas condições da superfície do solo e pela precipitação pluvial. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência de aplicações sucessivas de precipitações pluviais com diferentes perfis na formação do encrostamento superficial e, consequentemente, na taxa de infiltração de água em solo sem cobertura e com cobertura. Foram aplicadas três precipitações pluviais sucessivas para cada perfil de precipitação pluvial, em intervalos de 24 h, sendo usados os perfis de precipitação pluvial constante, exponencial decrescente, duplo exponencial adiantado e atrasado, com uma lâmina média de 55 mm por aplicação. Buscou-se ajustar um fator de decaimento da taxa de infiltração (Ti) em função da energia cinética acumulada da chuva, denominado de fator f, dado pela razão entre a taxa de infiltração estável (Tie) com efeito da chuva e a Tie sem o efeito da chuva. Foram avaliadas duas condições de cobertura do solo, solo sem cobertura e solo coberto com palhada, sendo os ensaios de infiltração realizados com um simulador de chuvas, em parcelas experimentais de dimensões de 1,0 x 0,7 m. Os resultados foram avaliados por meio de análises gráficas, análise de variância e teste de média. Verificou-se que os diferentes perfis de precipitação pluvial não influenciaram a infiltração de água no solo, tanto para o solo sem cobertura como para o solo com cobertura, sendo esta influenciada somente pelas aplicações sucessivas, com menores valores da taxa de infiltração obtidos na segunda e terceira aplicações. O decréscimo na Ti em solo sem cobertura foi devido à formação de encrostamento superficial, o que ocorreu logo na primeira aplicação. A Tie em solo sem cobertura teve decréscimo de 75 % se comparada à Tie em solo com cobertura. A lâmina infiltrada não foi influenciado pelos quatro perfis de precipitação pluvial. O fator f foi descrito com uso de uma equação do tipo exponencial.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of successively repeated precipitation patterns applied to bare and to covered soil, to quantify their effect on the formation of a soil crust and, consequently, on the soil water infiltration rate (Ti). Three rainfall events were simulated in 24 h intervals, with constant, decreasing exponential, early and late double exponential precipitation patterns, at a rainwater amount corresponding to 55 mm. The decrease factor of the infiltration rate (Ti) was adjusted as a function of the accumulated kinetic energy of the rainwater, called factor f, given by the ratio between the stable infiltration rate (Tie) affected by rain, and Tie with no effect of rain. Two situations of soil cover were evaluated: bare soil and soil covered with crop residues. A rainfall simulator was used in the infiltration experiments, on 1.0 x 0.7 m plots. The results were evaluated by graphical analysis, analysis of variance and means testing. It was found that the different precipitation profiles did not affect Ti of bare or covered soil. The Ti values were only influenced by successive rainfall, and the water infiltration rate was lowest after the 2nd and 3rd application. The decrease in Ti of bare soil was due to a crust on the soil surface, which was first formed after the 1st application. The stable infiltration rate (Tie) on bare soil decreased by 75 % when compared to Tie of covered soil. The infiltration depth was not influenced by any of the tested rainfall patterns. The factor f was described by an exponential equation.

A técnica da TDR é uma importante ferramenta para o estudo do teor de água no solo. Para o correto emprego dessa técnica, é necessário calibrar modelos que relacionam o conteúdo volumétrico de água no solo com a constante dielétrica deste, considerando as características de cada solo. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar a influência do tipo de solo e da forma de amostragem (amostra deformada e não deformada) na constante dielétrica (Ka) do solo e no desempenho de modelos para a estimativa do conteúdo volumétrico de água no solo (), usando a técnica TDR. Os solos utilizados foram um Cambissolo Háplico Tb distrófico (CX), um Latossolo Vermelho ácrico típico (LV) e um Neossolo Quartzarênico (RQ), que apresentam diferenças quanto à textura. As amostras de solo referentes a CX e LV foram coletadas com estruturas deformadas e não deformadas, e as de RQ, apenas deformadas, devido à baixa agregação deste. A calibração foi realizada com sondas compostas de três hastes com 0,10 m de comprimento efetivo e 0,05 m de resina, com espaçamento entre hastes de 0,017 m e sem resistor na haste central, conectadas a um equipamento TDR 100 da Campbell Cientific. Os valores de Ka, para um mesmo valor de , foram alterados somente pela variação do tipo de solo, não sendo influenciados pelo tipo de amostragem do solo (deformada e não deformada). Em relação aos modelos testados para estimativa de em função de Ka, o polinomial cúbico foi o que apresentou melhor ajuste aos dados de determinados por gravimetria para o Neossolo Quartzarênico e para o Cambissolo Háplico, enquanto para o Latossolo Vermelho um modelo linear apresentou melhor ajuste.

The technique of TDR (time-domain reflectometry) is an important tool for the study of soil water content. For a correct use of this technique, models that relate the volumetric water content in soil with the soil dielectric constant must be calibrated, considering the characteristics of each soil. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of soil type and sampling form (disturbed and undisturbed samples) on the dielectric constant (Ka) of the soil and the performance of models to estimate the volumetric water content in soil (θ) by TDR. The soils were a Haplic Cambisol, an Oxisol and a Typic Quartzipsamment, with different textures. Disturbed and undisturbed Haplic Cambisol and Oxisol samples were collected, but only disturbed Typic Quartzipsamment samples, due to its low aggregation. Calibration was performed with probes consisting of three rods (effective length 0.10 m and resin length 0.05 m), spaced 0.017 apart and without resistor on the center rod, connected to a TDR 100 (Campbell Scientific) equipment. The Ka values, for a same è value, were affected by variation of the soil type, but not influenced by the type of soil sampling (disturbed or undisturbed). For the models tested to estimate è as a function of Ka, the cubic polynomial model fit the θ data determined by gravimetry best for the Typic Quartzipsamment and Haplic Cambisol, whereas for the Oxisol a linear model fit better.
